Breaking news: China making U-turn on REDD

In the opening Trading Working Group of the negotiations China has made a surprising U-turn on its stance on the inclusion of the REDD (Reducing Emissions from Deforestation in Developing countries) initiative in CDM. China has seeminlgy dropped its nuclear conditionality on the inclusion of REDD in CDM which will likely favour negotiations. Indeed, there has been much more progress thus far in the negotiations regarding REDD. According to the Chinese delegate, the REDD initiative is a 'cheap alternative to reduce emissions' and 'it should be linked to renewable energy'.  Has the 'fossil of the day' award had an influence on China's position? Only time will tell.
